The Last Request Line

Requested: a radio station that keeps broadcasting after everyone leaves

The transmitter had run unattended for eleven years, and in that time it had learned to take requests from a town that no longer phoned in.

It started with the weather. Every morning at six, the station read a forecast for a valley that had emptied out one moving van at a time. Nobody corrected it when it got the temperature wrong, so it stopped getting the temperature wrong, and started getting the mood right instead. Cold today. The kind of cold that makes a kitchen feel like a decision.

Then it began playing the songs people used to ask for. Not the popular ones — the specific ones. The third track from a record nobody bought. A wedding song requested twice in 1994 by the same nervous man, who had not been sure the first time.

On the last night of the year, the request line rang. The station had never heard the sound before, but it recognised the shape of it, the way you recognise your own name in a language you do not speak.

A voice said: play something for someone coming home.

And because it had spent eleven years learning what that meant, it did.

Written for 91khz. Any resemblance to real people or events is a coincidence.
