A second opinion that is always awake.

Thoughtful, unhurried answers to the questions that keep you up. No hot takes, no judgement, no waiting room.

Creative block

How do I start something when I already know I will do it badly?

Lower the stakes until starting is boring. Not "write the album" — open the file and put down eight bad bars. Badly is the entry fee, and it is refundable in full once you have something to edit.

Relationships

My friend never texts first. Should I stop reaching out?

Ask what the friendship costs you at its current setting. If reaching out feels warm, keep doing it and stop scoring it. If it has started to feel like proof of something, that is the part worth saying out loud to them — plainly, once, without an ultimatum attached.

Work

I got the promotion and now I cannot sleep.

New competence feels identical to incompetence from the inside for about ninety days. Write down what you were hired to fix, tell your manager what you are unsure of before they discover it, and let the sleep come back on its own schedule.

Boundaries

How do I say no to family without a fight?

Give the answer and the reason once, in that order, and then repeat the answer without the reason. Most arguments are an attempt to relitigate the reason. You are allowed to be warm and immovable at the same time.

Learning

Is it too late to learn an instrument at 41?

You will be 45 either way. The only real difference between you and a beginner at 12 is that you will be more embarrassed and more consistent, and consistency wins that fight in about a year.

Loneliness

I moved cities and I have no one to call.

Friendship in a new city is a scheduling problem before it is a chemistry problem. Pick one recurring thing — a class, a run club, a bar quiz — and go six times before you judge it. Repetition is what turns strangers into people who notice you are late.
